According to the unified delineation of the 2022 version of the "Compulsory Education Sports and Health Curriculum Standards", the six major categories of sports-specific sports skills are ball sports, track and field sports, gymnastics sports, water or ice and snow sports, martial arts and traditional ethnic and folk sports, and emerging sports.

I have been teaching physical education at the grassroots level for almost 8 years. When this version of the classification was implemented, our teaching and research team held a three-day meeting to discuss. Compared with the previous scattered list of projects, the logic of this division is indeed much smoother, and it also leaves enough room for adjustments for schools in different regions.

After all, the most popular ball games are basically standard in every school, including football volleyball, table tennis, and even niche handball and softball. Last month, our district held a sports league for primary and secondary school students. The number of signups for ball games alone accounted for 60% of the total. After recess, there are always the most children running to the playground with the ball in their arms.

As for track and field, it is really the "basic skills" of all sports. If you practice the basic movements of running, jumping and shooting, you can quickly pick up any sports. Last year, a child who had struggled to pass sports before chose to practice hurdles for half a year. After improving his coordination and explosiveness, he was able to join the school team as a substitute even if he was not good at basketball before.

Many people's impression of gymnastics is still limited to somersaults and balance beams in competitive gymnastics. In fact, the most popular ones on campus now are aerobics, cheerleading, and technical sports. Our school's technical cheerleading team, which won the first prize in the provincial competition last year, practices gymnastics. The girls' core strength and posture are better than many children who specialize in dance.

Many people may not have noticed that the water or ice and snow categories are deliberately merged into major categories. There has been debate in the industry for a while. Many teachers from the north feel that it is more reasonable for ice and snow projects to be separated into separate categories. Teachers from the south also said that the audience for water sports is much wider than that of ice and snow. Later, it was finalized The merger is also to make it easier for each place to adapt to local conditions. For example, our southern school offers swimming, paddle boarding, and canoeing classes without any pressure. The Heilongjiang school that supports the counterpart directly offers speed skating, curling, and snowboarding. When communicating with each other, everyone feels that the other party's classes are very fresh.

Martial arts and traditional folk sports are considered to be the most distinctive category. It includes not only the familiar martial arts routines and Sanda, but also diabolo, dragon and lion dance, Mongolian wrestling, high-foot racing and other traditional sports of various ethnic groups. Last year, we opened Wing Chun and diabolo elective courses, and more children signed up than for football classes. Many parents came to ask if we could hold parent-child classes, saying they were much better than playing with mobile phones.

The last category of emerging sports has become the fastest growing in popularity in the past two years. Frisbee, orienteering, skateboarding, rock climbing, and the recently popular pickleball are all included. Of course, some old teachers have questioned it, saying that there is no unified competitive evaluation standard for such sports and should not be included in special skills. However, it cannot be tolerated by children. Children who used to hide in the shade of trees during physical education classes can now stay in the playground until school is over to practice skateboarding. Making children willing to move is the core purpose of physical education, isn't it?

Anyway, looking at these six categories, they basically cover the needs of children with different interests and foundations. It is no longer like before when there were only a few options such as basketball, volleyball, and track and field. If you choose the event you like, exercise will not be a chore.
